The Portuguese Pointer has been around for a thousand plus years. They might well be the breed responsible for the pointing instinct in dogs. Studies are underway to determine the ancestors all pointing dogs have in common . It is thought that all of the 40 plus breeds of pointing dogs they have one common ancestor. It will might be the Portuguese Pointers from the Iberian Peninsula . The breed is recognized in America by the United Kennel Club (UKC) , The North America Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA), and The American Kennel Club (AKC) under its foundation stock program.
